FDM is een afkorting voor Ftweedehands Depositie Modeling en is de meest gebruikte technologie voor eenvoudige en snelle prototypes. Het materiaal wordt geleverd als rollen draden en naar de bewegende kop van de 3D-printer gevoerd. In de kop wordt het plastic plaatselijk gesmolten en via een fijne hete spuitmond op de bouwplaat gedeponeerd. De kop wordt computergestuurd om een bepaald pad in x- en y-richting te volgen. Zodra het materiaal is afgezet, koelt het af en wordt het weer hard. Als de spuitkop het volledige gebied van die laag heeft afgelegd, wordt het opbouwgebied met 0,1 mm verkleind en wordt het proces herhaald.

SLA is een afkorting voor Stereolithografie-apparatuur en is de oudste vorm van 3D printen. Het materiaal is vloeibaar en wordt geleverd in flessen. Het bouwgebied bestaat uit een klein bad met een doorzichtige bodem. Het bad wordt automatisch of handmatig gevuld met het materiaal. Hierna zakt het bouwplatform in het bad, waarbij een ruimte van 0,1 mm tussen het bouwplatform en de badbodem overblijft. Een laser of andere UV-bron traceert de laag van onderaf door de doorzichtige badbodem. Als de volledige laag getraceerd is, beweegt het bouwplatform 0,1 mm omhoog en wordt het proces herhaald.

De Voordelen van SLA zijn duidelijk. Prints komen er veel gladder uit en de zichtbare laaglijnen zijn minimaal. De meeste onderdelen kunnen meteen worden gebruikt en geschilderd zonder veel schuurwerk. Kleine details zoals de tekst op de achterkant zijn dieper en duidelijker. De lasergrootte is 0,085 mm vergeleken met de 0,4 mm nozzle van een FDM-printer, waardoor zeer kleine details kunnen worden nagemaakt. De onderdelen van SLA doen niet onder voor veel duurdere industriële oplossingen.

De Gelijkenissen tussen FDM en SLA is dat in beide systemen lagen niet in het niets kunnen worden geprint. Als een onderdeel overhangt, moet het in beide systemen worden ondersteund om het model correct op te bouwen. Beide technologieën gebruiken dus een ondersteuningsstructuur om het model en de overhang tijdens het printen te ondersteunen. Deze steunen moeten na het printen worden verwijderd.

De Nadelen van SLA zijn dat het duurder is dan FDM (hoewel nog steeds veel goedkoper dan industriële oplossingen). Bij FDM drijft alleen het materiaal op de kosten en het af en toe vervangen van de spuitmond. Bij SLA is het materiaal ongeveer twee keer zo duur en de bouwplaat is een onderdeel dat na een aantal prints vervangen moet worden. De prints van SLA moeten na het printen ook worden gereinigd, wat tijd en reinigingsresolutie kost.
